I have secured a location to spend Christmas day inside with my fellow hobos! One of my friends who has spent the last ten Christmas days at home on his own has welcomed four hobos into his home. I was starting to panic. This can be a bit of a sad time for the street community. Most of us don’t see our families much if at all. Many rough sleepers get to stay in a hotel over the festive season. Crisis at Christmas puts up over 570 people in three hotels in London. It also provides day support for a further 2800 people in insecure accommodation. My friends that have been allocated a bed are very relieved to have a roof over their heads for a couple of weeks, of course. A couple of my friends are in hotels where they don’t know anyone else there. I also have a friend who could have had a space but only if he didn’t bring his dog. You can’t have visitors at Crisis and there is a 10:30 curfew so it is still difficult socialising with loved ones indoors My approach to Christmas this year has been to ignore it until I couldn’t anymore, knowing that some sort of idea or plan will emerge and it’ll all be ok in the end. With two days to go a plan has emerged! Bloody hell that was cutting it fine! Still got an insane amount of preparation, shopping, cooking etc to do. Got a slightly sick feeling from being the instigator and organiser of this bunch of lost souls’ Christmas experience therefore I’m responsible for us having a good time. I hope everyone behaves themselves. I hope they get on with each other. A couple of them don’t know each other. These are unique personalities, quite radically different from one another, wish me luck! Anyway, I hope all you proper people have a wonderful time, I’m looking forward to it all being over so I can embrace the new year. I am looking forward to starting 2025 and a new chapter of my life. This year will be the year I rebuild my relationship with my family. Watch this space family! Let’s not forget why we are celebrating in the first place. Jesus was in the same boat as us hobos, there was no room at the inn for him. Remembering that helps to give me strength in my darkest hour. Merry Christmas:)
