The Union Jack is the national [[flag]] of the [[United Kingdom]] – it combines the crosses of three nations into one.
- It’s made up of the red cross of St George (England), the white saltire of St Andrew (Scotland), and the red saltire of St Patrick (Ireland), layered together.
- The flag was first created in [[1606]] when England and Scotland united under King [[James I]], but it gained its modern form in [[1801]] after Ireland joined the union.
- Technically, it’s only called the "Union Jack" when flown on a ship; otherwise, it’s the "Union Flag" – though most people use "Union Jack" all the time.
- Wales isn’t represented on the flag because it was considered part of England when it was designed – an omission some Welsh people still don't like.
